Australia history dates back to as early as prehistoric times about forty-one thousand years ago, between the earliest human inhabitants of the Australian continent, to the first known unearthing of Australia in 1606 by Europeans.  However, since no written confirmation of human dealings in Australia has been found for that period, the era is submitted as prehistory rather than history.

Written Australia history began in 1606, when a Dutch navigator Willem Janszoon, in his ship Duyfken plotted a route to the Gulf of Carpentaria, first sighted and made landfall at the western coast of Cape York Peninsula.  In 1616, Dirk Hatog, a Dutch sailor, took a new southern route from his usual course, crossing the Indian Ocean, to where he ended up on the offshore island of Western Australia.  He became the first recognized European to enter the Australian soil.

Captain James Cook in 1768 left England for a three-year voyage to the Pacific that also led him to Australia, landing on the eastern coast at Botany Bay on April 29, 1770.  Mapping the region, Captain James Cook named the area New South Wales, and it was him and his crew, together with the botanist Sir Joseph Banks, who soon after maintained settlement in Australia, adding another impact on Australia history.

Australia climate is as varied and diverse as their people. Australians experience different weather conditions because each region has different climate to begin with. Depending on which part of Australia you are in, chances are when you are traveling from state to the other during particular season you would have to experience changes in climate condition all in the same day. Interestingly, Australia climate is the exact opposite of that in countries of the North Pole region. Spring is in September until November, summer takes place during December to February, autumn follows in the months of March to May while during June until August snow is expected because it will already be wintertime.

Each state in Australia has different climate. In New South Wales, which is the most populous among the five states, the climate varies from region to region and from city to city. On the one hand, in Sydney the temperature never goes beyond the normal cold and the usual hot. During winter the temperature is bearable, which means there is no need to bring jacket and thick clothing. Summer in Sydney is a complete opposite because the sun could be terribly hot. On the other hand in Canberra, which is a planned city, the rainfall is very minimal, summer is really very warm while winter is very cold and occasionally stormy.

The official national anthem of Australia, Advance Australia Fair, was composed by Peter Dodds McCormick, a Glasgow-born citizen who used the alias “Amicus” which meant “friend” in the nineteenth century. It was first sung by Andrew Fairfax during a function in Sydney on the celebration of St. Andrew’s Day on November 30, 1878.
